Some people reach great heights. A rare few help others believe they can rise higher too.
This Nims Dai tribute remembers Nirmal Purja, the Nepali mountaineer known around the world as Nims Dai. His courage, determination, and belief that “Nothing Is Impossible” inspired people far beyond the climbing community.
His death following an avalanche on Broad Peak in Pakistan on July 30, 2026, brought deep sorrow to Nepal and the mountaineering world. Nine other climbers also lost their lives in the tragedy, leaving families, friends, and teammates across several countries in mourning.
Nims Dai lived a life shaped by discipline, bold goals, and a strong connection to Nepal. He became known worldwide through Project Possible, his mission to climb all 14 mountains above 8,000 metres within seven months. He completed the widely reported sequence in 6 months and 6 days(189 days) in 2019, a journey later shared with millions through the Netflix documentary 14 Peaks: Nothing Is Impossible.
Yet his story was about more than speed, records, or summit photographs.
He helped bring Nepali mountaineers to the centre of the global climbing story. He showed that they were not merely supporting other expeditions, but setting goals, leading teams, making difficult decisions, and creating history in their own names.
That spirit was seen clearly on K2 in January 2021, when Nimsdai joined nine other Nepali climbers in completing the mountain’s first winter ascent. The climbers united for the final push and shared the achievement as one Nepali team.
For many people, “Nothing Is Impossible” will remain closely tied to his memory. It was not simply the name of a film or a phrase repeated before a climb. It represented the way he faced goals that appeared beyond reach, with preparation, sacrifice, courage, and trust in the people beside him.
Nims Dai’s story spoke to people who had never stood on a summit. Students, young athletes, workers, and dreamers could see part of themselves in his refusal to let doubt decide for him.
His message did not ask everyone to climb higher peaks. It asked them to face their own goals with preparation, patience, and faith in the people around them.
That is why “Nothing Is Impossible” became more than a documentary title. It became a reminder that where a person begins does not always decide how far they can go.
For many Nepalis, his journey also carried a sense of shared pride. A story born in Nepal had reached audiences around the world without leaving its roots behind. Netflix describes 14 Peaks as a story about Nepal’s connection to high-altitude mountaineering, told through Nims Dai and Project Possible.
His final journey ended in tragedy, but that is not how his life should be remembered.
Nimsdai will be remembered for carrying Nepal’s name to the world’s highest mountains. He will be remembered for the pride he gave to many Nepalis, the attention he brought to Nepali climbers, and the confidence his story gave to people facing mountains of their own.
As we remember him, we also honour the nine other climbers who died on Broad Peak. Every life lost carried its own dreams, relationships, and story.
The climbing world has lost one of its best-known figures. Nepal has lost a son whose journey reached far beyond its borders.
Rest in peace, Nims Dai.
